Bachelor of Science majoring in Microbiology

“Being the son of a tradesman and having spent much of my youth working as a trades assistant, I was much better at the physical sciences and mathematics, of which I went to university to pursue engineering. However, after much turmoil, it was my curiosity in infectious diseases and malaria that led me to pursue a degree in biological sciences; something I had never had much prior experience in.

University until that point had been very difficult and transitioning to a different field posed a set of new challenges and with certainty It was the friends that I made along the way that made the journey worthwhile. I am proud to say that because of their time and commitment to helping pursue one of my life goals, I have finally completed my degree after 8 long years; a testament to them.

In the later years of my degree, UQ SPIA played a vital part in providing me a community full of support and comradery. Whether it was Wantok Wednesdays, overnight study sessions or touch footy, there was always a feeling of likeminded friends who have grown with similar backgrounds and share the common goal of promoting the pursuit of education in island communities.

To the friends I’ve made in UQ SPIA, thank you! Thankyou for helping me become a better student! And thank you for supporting and encouraging me through my degree! I can only hope I did the same for you. All I have learned, I will take with me with fond memories as I pursue further study.”
