UQSPIA CLASS OF 2017 ALUM
Frank Plunkett - Australian Japanese
Bachelor of Arts (Political Science/ International relations)/Law

"I’ve really enjoyed my time at UQ. It has been an amazing experience filled with plenty of laughs and good times. My favourite part would have to be the student community, much of which is supported through various student societies like SPIA. It is hard to find such a tight-knit community elsewhere.
The SPIA community has to be one of the most open, laid-back and supportive on campus. SPIA gatherings are always guaranteed to be fun and a relief to some of the more standard university events that may involve a lot of going out. One of my highlights has to be being a part of the TRL SPIA team under the guidance of SuperCoach Silvest .
The study itself was pretty interesting and rewarding. I honesty loved my Arts degree, allowing me to better understand humanity and allow for an all-rounded tertiary education. My Law degree, though more challenging, was very rewarding, involving formidable analytical skills that can effect positive change in the community (especially when applied through the UQ Pro Bono Centre).
I'll most likely be going on to complete further studies. I'm still in the process of deciding, but looking into either completing a Diploma of Language (Japanese) or a Masters in Law.
From it all, I think learning to find balance is extremely important. I think it can be pretty common to get caught up with casual/ full-time work, and a lot of the time it may be unavoidable. We have all been there and will all end up there eventually. Despite this, finding balance is key in finding time for others. The student experience is once in a lifetime and there will always be plenty of time for work in the future. In short, always say yes to being involved!"
